Surrounded by the majestic Himalayas the icy blue waters of Gosaikunda serve as a religious site for Hindus. It is believed that lord Shiva created the lake cracking open the nearby mountain to quench his thirst after inhaling the deadly Kalkut poison.

Thus the lake holds great reverence from the Hindu and Buddhist communities. During the month of August, the lake is visited by thousands of pilgrims in the auspicious occasion of Janai Purnima.Home to the indigenous Tamang and Sherpa people, the region boasts stunning Himalayan panorama including Langtang Lirung (7,227m), Langtang Ri (7,205m), Dorje Lakpa (6,996m), Langshisha Ri (6,427m), and the majestic Shisha Pangma (8,013m) to the far north.
