Where Does Annapurna Circuit Start and End?

The Gateway to Annapurna Circuit Trek: Besisahar

The Annapurna Circuit Trek usually begins in a tiny region northwest of Kathmandu called Besisahar. It is from this place where trekkers start their adventure, following a colorful drive from the capital city into the diverse geographical body of the Annapurna region.

Ascent: From Subtropical Forests to Alpine Meadows

After Besisahar, the trek route completely changes its character: it zigzags through plush, subtropical forests of rice terraces and villages with breathtaking views of Nepalese rural life.

Along the way, there are hot springs in Chame, and Pisang has its old monastery, whereas Manang forms an important acclimatization point. Culture is different; architecture, customs, and practices are different in every place. The vegetation begins to change here as altitude is gained and the first views appear of the astonishing Annapurna range, preparing trekkers for what lies ahead.

The Challenge: Conquering Thorong La Pass

Crossing Thorong La Pass at 5416 meters is arguably what makes this hike worth it. Although it is quite a tough climb that tests endurance levels, seeing all those utterly beautiful and overwhelming Himalayan ranges will leave you breathless.

The Descent: Muktinath and Beyond

When you come down the pass, you will reach Muktinath, an important holy place for both Hindus and Buddhists. This is where you could be said to have finished your circuit trek properly, although many people choose to go even further than that.

The Return: Pokhara or Kathmandu

The trek typically ends with a drive to Pokhara city beside Lakesides or back to Kathmandu, thus making the duration of the 12-14 days trip fully rewarding.

Best Places You Will Visit on Annapurna Circuit Trek

Manang

Manang is a beautiful settlement and a popular place along the Annapurna Circuit Trek. It sits at an approximate height of 3,500 meters where one can get delightful views of Annapurna, Gangapurna, and the Tilicho Peak. It is also a favorable place for trekkers looking for acclimatization rest before going for steeper challenges. This mountain village is rich in cultural heritage and provides clear pictures of the way of life of the people of the Himalayas. There are also stunning local Monasteries and scenery at Gangapurna Glacier which one can also hike around the village.

Thorong La Pass

Thorong la Pass at 5,416m is the highest elevation reached by the Annapurna Circuit Trek. Because the pass is very high, the approach is rather difficult and it is only possible to remain there for 10-20 minutes because of altitude sickness. The views from the pass, however, are equally pleasing, with a 360-degree view of Mount Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range. The level of gratification that comes along with the successful crossing of a pass like Thorong La is quite high and is always pegged as the main highlight of the hike.

Muktinath

At an altitude of 3,800 meters, Muktinath is a sacred place for both the followers of Hinduism and Buddhism. It is a sacred place also for the trekkers since they can reach the Muktinath Temple, a spiritual center where it is believed that one can be free from the bondage of the birth-death cycle. The temple compound consists of 108 water spouts. The tranquil nature that is accompanied by the spiritual aspect of Muktinath makes it an unforgettable place along the trek.

Tatopani, Beni

Tatopani in Beni, is well known for its natural hot springs. After so many days of trekking, relaxing in the warm, clean, and mineral-filled water can be quite relaxing. Tatopani is surrounded by attractive sceneries which gives the place a comfy break and is loved by trekkers as a pleasant interval before they carry on with their journey.

The trail starts from Bhartang which is quite a plain track for most of its extent and has only occasional rocky patches. During the tour, you are able to see the hilly terrain of Nepal, the snow clad mountains, the glistening rivers and waterfalls.

After the Bhartang, the trail is towards Dhukur Pokhari which is crossed by the suspension bridges and has a view of the Swarga Dwari. After a 5-6 hour trek you will arrive at Lower Pisang (3,200 meters). The final climb of the day leads to Upper Pisang (3,300 m), where you spend the night.

When at Upper Pisang, one has a beautiful opportunity to enjoy the splendid view of Chulu peaks, Tilicho, Annapurna massifs, and Nawal peaks which provide a beautiful ending to the beautiful day.

Day 5 of our trek is from Pisang to Nawal which takes us to an altitude of 3,650 meters. From Pisang onwards the trail is enchanting and the mountains of the Annapurna range start emerging in all its glory. The nature is a mix of difficult trails and calm areas and that is the reason this route is perfect for a hiking trip.

From then on, the views of the Annapurna massif get more and more dominating as the backdrop to the trekking adventure. There are numerous trees and shrubs along the trail and small villages through which the tour goes, giving the tourists a glimpse of the local lifestyle.

At night, we spend our night in a small teahouse in Nawal where the fresh air from the mountains and stunning nature helps one to calm down after the day of traveling.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and DinnerAccommodation: Trekking tea house

On the sixth day you travel from Nawal to Manang and reach an altitude of 3540 meters. This segment of the trek is comparatively less tiring and this way you get the maximum time to enjoy the splendid views of the Himalayas. It is amazing to move through the trail and the peaks emerge to give the whole environment a very calm and gorgeous look.

On the way, you will get to see typical villages where dwellers of the region live their daily lives in accordance with the traditions. The cultural side of the country is manifested in the architecture and hospitality of people of this region, which is as diverse as the landscapes seen on the route.

One can sleep in a tea house in Manang with a stunning view of the mountains after having a tiring day of trekking. Manang is a natural-cultural paradise which is ideal for relaxation before heading further into the Himalayas.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and DinnerAccommodation: Trekking tea house

When one has trekked beyond 3000m, reaching Manang, it is advisable to have a rest so as to allow the body to adapt to the high altitude. This much deserved break allows one to take a look at the beautiful scenery that comes with high altitudes.

Some of the trekkers who visit Manang choose this opportunity to go and see the Gangapurna Lake which is about a 15 minutes walk from the village. For those who feel energetic, there is a hilltop monastery which offers a spectacular view of the Himalayas giving a breathtaking view of the hills and mountains. Those interested in the cultural experience, there are the Tibetan influenced gompas and monasteries.

At the end of the day you will go back to your lodge for a meal and have a chance to rest before going on with the Annapurna circuit the following day.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and DinnerAccommodation: Trekking tea house

Day 8 of the trek is a rest day in Manang to allow for acclimatization so that the next day the group will head up the trail and leave the Marsyangdi Valley behind after a warm breakfast. The trek happens through Upper-Manang which covers Tanki Manang village and towards Gunsang, which is a small Himalayan settlement.

The approach to Yak Kharka can be tough sometimes but the ground gets easier from here onward. Yak Kharka is reached by trekking for 4-5 hours where you will gradually ascend to the resting point.

Here you will relax and enjoy wonderful meals with the stunning views of the Annapurna range, Pisang, Gangapurna and other Himalayan giants. This makes for a wonderful experience in this high altitude wonderland.

The ninth day of you trek will take you from Yak Kharka to Thorang Phedi or High Camp. Although the distance can be covered in 3-4 hours, it is promising and filled with various interesting sights. You will come across suspension bridges and will have to trek along the side of the mountain through scrub and loose rocks between Jarsang Khola 4610m and Phedi 4420m up to Thorong Phedi.

This high altitude trek is wonderful with displays of ancient houses and mountains, Annapurna massifs, Gangapurna and Himalayas. You can even encounter some wild animals like the snow leopard that can be seen occasionally in these snowy and rocky terrains if luck is on your side.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and DinnerAccommodation: Trekking tea house

Trekking in Annapurna Circuit is exciting and day 10 of the hike is one that will remain imprinted in your memory all your life. From Thorong Phedi you are going to have a tiresome yet interesting trek to Thorong La Pass and Muktinath. The northern region of Nepal is endowed with beautiful mountains such as Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Gangapurna and Himchuli among others as you trek.

Thorong La Pass, at 5,416 meters is the highest point of the trek. From there one has to travel downwards, it may take 3-4 hours to reach Muktinath which is holy shrine for both Hindu and Buddhist community and has significant historical and religious significance. In Muktinath you can worship in the temple and have a ritual bath in 108 holy water spouts. In the morning, you will have breakfast and then you will go for a trek where you will have your lunch then proceed with the trek to reach the tea house where you will spend the night.

As a result of traveling, especially for many hours, you can take time and have a natural bath in these hot springs with wonderful views.

The evening is yours to wander off and discover more of this beautiful area or perhaps there is nothing as beautiful as the quiet night in this lovely village. Our overnight stay in Tatopani will be a combination of leisure and contemplation making it a deserved break in our trekking.

Continuing the tour from Pokhara, you will get an opportunity to visit this active city or proceed to Kathmandu. No matter if you decide to stay in Pokhara and sit by the lakeside or go directly to Kathmandu, the day will be rich in the beautiful views and cultural impressions.

In the evening, we will proceed to our accommodation, and discuss the wonderful experiences that we have encountered all through.

Meals: Breakfast, and LunchAccommodation: Hotel

Today is a rest day after days of trekking and traveling through the mountains, today we are in Kathmandu. This means that you can decide to go shopping, tour around the city or just stroll along the narrow and busy streets of the city, taking in the energy of the place.

This day should be used to relax and take the much needed break from work. In the evening there will be a special meal and people will be invited to share the memories from the trek. It is in this stage that the group gets to have fun, and can celebrate accomplishments before the trip is over.

This is the last day of our wonderful journey which has been full of great moments. Tomorrow after breakfast our team will arrange a transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your onward journey.

Is It Safe For Solo or Female Travelers?

The Annapurna Circuit is considered safe for independent travelers, including women trekkers. Nevertheless, some precautions are recommended. Many solo female trekkers have done the trek without any problems, but one should not ignore the possibility of unforeseen occurrences. To counter such concerns, employing a local guide along with the local travel agency services is always encouraged. Safety would be heightened if a local guide and an agency were involved, as both know the areas of the Annapurna Circuit route very well. At Happland Treks, we have efficiently organized the Annapurna Circuit for both individual and women travelers and many others in the Everest and Langtang areas. With the experience gained in many trekking routes in Nepal, we do our best to provide safe and pleasant treks for all our customers.

Drinking Water On The Annapurna Trekking

While on the Annapurna Circuit, it is recommended that one always drinks plenty of water, the good news is that it is easy to find drinking water. Drinking water is also readily available at the tea houses and the lodges that are available on the trail. Such facilities normally provide water that has been filtered or boiled to make sure that it’s fit to be taken.

On the Annapurna Circuit, drinking water needs some planning in advance. There will be several natural water sources like mountains, streams, and taps. All these may seem clean and have a crystal appearance, with the water tempting you to take a sip; it is highly advised to purify the water using water purifying tablets, a portable water filter or StepPIN

Trekkers can carry water purification tablets purchased from pharmacies or shops in Kathmandu. If you intend to buy SteriPEN, it is advisable to do so in your home country. The use of plastic water bottles is prohibited in the entire Annapurna region and more so from Chhomrong. Therefore, do not bring plastic bottles since they will not be sold; instead, bring a thermos for refilling purposes.

To use STERI PENS Follow the steps below:

  1. Take clear water and fill a bottle.
  2. Now turn on the SteriPEN and insert it into the bottled water.
  3. Wait 48-90 seconds to stir the water until the light signals that purification is completed.

What To Expect On The Annapurna Circuit Trek?

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is an introduction to one of the most beautiful terrains in Nepal: the Annapurna Conservation Area. You will get views of some of the greatest mountains, including Annapurna I, II, III, IV, Machhapuchhre, Dhaulagiri, Gangapurna, Tukuche, Nilgiri, Tilicho Peak, and Manaslu.

The geography of the Annapurna region is also very diverse, and you will be going through the areas that are covered with subtropical forests and through the regions that are as dry as a desert. The trail passes through villages inhabited by the Gurung and Thakali people, and their customs and traditions are illustrated. These cheerful and friendly people invite you to join their life, to learn about their centuries-long culture, and perhaps, you will be interested in their legends and myths. It is a country of monasteries, and the spiritual pulse of the Himalayas is very vigorous in this region.

Accommodation During The Annapurna Circuit Trek

In the Annapurna Circuit Trekking, accommodation is arranged in basic twin sharing or triple sharing tea houses that offer homes away from homes to the trekkers after long day hikes. They also provide dormitory-style accommodation. Although the toilets are provided in common use, they are maintained to be as clean and appropriate as possible to make the customers comfortable.

Training Requirement for Annapurna Circuit Trek

Vast physical fitness is not required for the Annapurna Circuit Trek but some degree of training can improve your experience. Start light training a couple of weeks before your travel concentrating more on cardio and hiking. Do light exercises like walking or jogging 3-4 weeks before embarking on the trek.

Having prior trekking experience is an advantage but not a necessity. Most people who are fit can do the circuit, even without particular training. Nevertheless, some light training will enhance the pleasure of the journey and minimize the chances of tiredness during the trip and altitude sickness.

Mountain Sickness in The Annapurna Circuit Trek

AMS or Mountain sickness can be quite a problem on the Annapurna Circuit Trek since most of the trail is above 3000 meters. AMS is experienced when the body fails to adjust to the lower oxygen levels at high altitudes, and this results in conditions like headaches, nausea, and fatigue, among others. If not well handled, it may progress to more complex conditions such as HAPE and HACE; both are fatal.

How to Prevent AMS on the Annapurna Circuit Trek?

It is, therefore, very important to have measures in place to prevent mountain sickness during trekking. The essential preventative measures includes:

  • Gradual accommodation by taking rest days at high altitudes
  • Drinking a lot of water
  • Consuming energy-rich foods
  • Not taking alcohol and cigarettes.
  • Descending soon if you experience the symptoms of mountain sickness.

What Is The Best Season for an Annapurna Circuit Trip?

Annapurna Circuit Trek is best done in Spring (March to May) or Autumn (September to October). These seasons provide a more reliable climate and impressive views. Nevertheless, these seasons come with a high number of trekkers. The trek is possible at any season, however, there are a lesser number of trekkers in the off-season. Note that it is impossible to predict mountain weather as it changes at any time. Although the peak seasons allow for overall better conditions.

Spring (March to May)

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is best done during spring since the temperatures are fairly mild, the weather is clear and the vegetation is green. When the snow has gone, the trails are more manageable and one gets to see the beautiful sights of the Rhododendrons, Magnolias and other flowers that cover the slopes. This season is relatively good for the enthusiasts of trekking as the hills and the valleys are adorned with green vegetation and flowers. Also, the season is good for trekking, because in spring there is not much rain, and the weather is calm and stable.

Autumn (September to November)

The Annapurna Circuit Trek can also be done in the autumn season which is recognized as the best season of the Annapurna Circuit Trek because of its clear sky, cool climate, and the clear view of mountains. When the monsoons are gone, there is no haze or dew, and the mountains of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri offer one of the better sights in Nepal. This is due to the friendly working temperature; compared to the very high working temperature in the daytime, it is considerably lower in the evening when trekking. The trails are also crowded with hikers because this is one of the best times to travel as the weather is good and visibility is quite good. For those who love ‘Cultural Tours’, ‘Autumn’ is perfect for it because people of the region celebrate otherwise or various festivals like Dashain and Tihar.

Nonetheless, these services require some fees estimated at $3-5 per person.

There are very few charging facilities in teahouses. The charging points and Multiplug are not present in your rooms. You will have to use communal charging which is in the main hall. An extra $3-5 will be charged per full charge. You must also consider bringing a power bank for backup power so it won’t be a hassle.

WiFi:

WiFi is available in most Tea Houses, but since we will be in the mountains, WiFi can sometimes be unrealiable. It is usually an additional $3-5 to use WiFi. If you need a more reliable connection or for emergency communication, it is recommended to purchase a local SIM card which often has better internet than the Tea Houses.

What Is The Highest Altitude of The Trek?

The Annapurna Circuit Trek, which is one of the most popular trekking routes in Nepal, goes up to the highest point of Thorong La Pass, which is 5,416 meters/17,769 feet. This part of the trek involves a high-altitude pass, which is, however, very exhausting but presents the trekkers with excellent views of the different Himalayan mountains.

Money Exchange in Kathmandu

In Kathmandu, it isn’t hard to find a quick and easy way to exchange currency. Visitors can change money at any hotel, bank, or one of the many currency exchange agencies located all over the Thamel district. It is worth noting that, in addition, Thamel has more than 1000 ATMs, facilitating access to the local currency. Most of the trekking companies further help in exchanging currencies. However, it isn’t a good idea to rely on services like that when going above the mountains, so make sure you have changed enough before heading forward. Please take this into consideration for your planning.

Trek Annapurna Circuit Difficulty Level

The Annapurna circuit trek is generally categorized as a moderate to challenging trek because of the rough and steep terrain and heights it passes through. One of the largest problems is the climb to Thorong La Pass, which has an elevation of 5,416 meters (17,769 feet). The high-altitude crossing is not just an endurance feat but also a climbers’ choreographed step across that must be approached with caution in order to avoid the effects of high-altitude sickness. The complication of the terrain that includes the typically green and sometimes very wet subtropical zone and the dry alpine zone also presents a challenge, making the trek exciting and fulfilling for the trekker.

It is estimated that trekkers have to walk for 6 to 7 hours every day, crossing difficult terrains that demand both strength and willpower. The alternating steep climbs and drops and the changeable weather in the mountains require one to be in good physical shape. Cardiovascular training, as well as strength-building training, are essential for those intending to undertake this trek. Still, the landscapes of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range and the cultural difference are more than enough to compensate for the hardships of the trek.

How are the Trails of Annapurna Circuit Trek?

The Annapurna Circuit Trek has numerous trail conditions. Travelers will be crossing the bridges that are constructed with local wood. The trail is steep up and down as you trek towards Thorong La Pass, which is the highest point of the trek. Likewise, the descent begins once you have crossed the Thorong la Pass. The trails also keep on alternating while heading upwards on one day; you head downwards on another day. As such, lush green hills and valleys will accompany you throughout your journey. Additionally, villages with Buddhist locals reside in them allowing trekkers to witness the unique Buddhist and Tibetan culture, traditions, and religion.

Typical day on The Annapurna Circuit Trek

While the scenery and mountain views change daily, the routine remains familiar. The trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar that takes 6-8 hours. Trekking starts the next morning. Each day you are up early, about 7 am, for breakfast at the teahouse. After it’s time to pack your day bag with essentials (water, camera, sunscreen, etc.) give your duffel bag to the porter by 7:45 am.

At 8 am you’ll hit the trail for several hours in a trek with your guide. There’s plenty of time along this easy-going part of each day’s walk for looking around or enjoying lively conversation among guides, porters, or fellow trekkers while walking through villages or on trails. Once you reach the teahouse for the night, dinner is at around 7 pm.

Weather in the Annapurna Circuit Himalaya trek

The weather in the mountains is unstable and generally changes at any time. The peak trekking periods are during spring and autumn. Winter treks are possible but in the Monsoon season, the trek is very difficult.

January

There is a drop in temperature in the month of January in Annapurna Circuit. The snow level is also high towards the high altitudes, where crossing the Thorong La Pass can be a challenge. The lower altitude regions are also cold, but not unbearably.

February

The weather during February is almost the same but the cold is not as harsh as January. Still at high altitudes, recently fallen snow can be expected. The afternoons are sunny and clear with the best visibility ever experienced.

March

March is the first month of spring. The temperature begins to rise very gradually during this time. The lower altitude Rhododendron trees begin to blossom. The trekking environment is fun every day and more and more people are trekking into the hiking trails.

April

The month of April usually has pleasant and tolerable temperatures across the Annapurna Circuit. This month also comes with good visibility and beautiful ranges, making it ideal for hikes and walks.

May

May is warm and marks the end of spring. The weather remains stable, but it starts getting hotter at lower elevations. Snow has mostly disappeared from the high trails, and flowers are in full bloom. Trekking is enjoyable, though pre-monsoon showers may begin toward the end of the month.

June

This is when the monsoon starts. Humidity rises as temperatures increase in many lower areas. There will be mud on your way ahead while you navigate through foggy paths.

July

Treks are hard this month because of heavy rains, landslides, and leeches.

August

Even though hiking can be done in regions like Mustang that lie in rain shadow areas, August still follows the monsoon pattern characterized by cloudy sky and incessant rains.

September

By September end, the monsoon is gone; bringing about clearer skies and settled weather conditions. The time for trekking thus becomes very favorable though some trails in the first week may remain wet.

October

October is an exceptional month for trekking with its balanced temperatures and better sighting range. While the trails might be thronged with numerous trekkers, one can smoothly cross through Thorong La Pass in pleasant climatic conditions.

November

Weather patterns are consistent, the cold air is pleasant along with the clear skies observed in November. However, it gets cold, especially in higher elevation areas but the skies are good and visibility is not compromised. This is thus the perfect month for trekking since there will be no heavy snowfall in the mountains yet.

December

With December comes lower temperatures and snowfall possibilities at higher altitudes. Early in the month, there are not many people on the paths. Hiking along these paths can be done if one has appropriate cold clothing; however, by later months Thorong La Pass may become inaccessible due to snow accumulation.

Travel and Trekking Insurance in the High-Altitude

If you are going on the Annapurna Circuit trek in Nepal, trekking insurance is very important and cannot be ignored. This travel insurance generally covers the costs of helicopter evacuations, medical emergencies, and the safety of the luggage. It is very difficult and expensive to deal with any unforeseen occurrences in the absence of travel medical insurance. Make sure your requirements cover high-altitude trekking and rescue by helicopter. This kind of insurance allows concentrating on the beautiful views of the Himalayas rather than worrying. Therefore opt for proper trekking insurance coverage prior to starting on this trip.

Nepal Visa Information

Tourist visas are issued at the Tribhuvan International Airport and the land borders of Nepal upon arrival in the country. Visitors must bring a passport which should be valid for a period not less than 6 months, a passport-sized photo, and the required payment for the fee. It is recommended to carry the exact dollar amount.

Most tourists can get visas on arrival, but some country nationals may need to get approval in advance. Requirements for entry and other related concerns frequently change. Thus, always confirm any and all such information with up-to-date official websites.

Visa extensions are obtainable at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu or at any other approved areas if travelers want to remain longer than the time given in the initial visa.

Be sure to have blank pages on your passport for any visa stamp. Otherwise, entry may be refused or may cause problems with the immigration officers in Nepal.

Tipping - Tips to the Guide and Porter

You should tip the guide and porter after you end your trek. It is a way to thank them for their excellent service. There is no fixed amount of tips you have to give. It depends upon how much you like their service and how satisfied you are with their service. Tipping should be whatever you would like to offer, however the very fact is that it’s expected and sort of respectful because they’re putting more effort into carrying your luggage, guiding you on your route, explaining about Nepal culture, and lots of more.
