Is It Safe For Solo or Female Travelers?
The Annapurna Circuit is considered safe for independent travelers, including women trekkers. Nevertheless, some precautions are recommended. Many solo female trekkers have done the trek without any problems, but one should not ignore the possibility of unforeseen occurrences. To counter such concerns, employing a local guide along with the local travel agency services is always encouraged. Safety would be heightened if a local guide and an agency were involved, as both know the areas of the Annapurna Circuit route very well. At Happland Treks, we have efficiently organized the Annapurna Circuit for both individual and women travelers and many others in the Everest and Langtang areas. With the experience gained in many trekking routes in Nepal, we do our best to provide safe and pleasant treks for all our customers.
Drinking Water On The Annapurna Trekking
While on the Annapurna Circuit, it is recommended that one always drinks plenty of water, the good news is that it is easy to find drinking water. Drinking water is also readily available at the tea houses and the lodges that are available on the trail. Such facilities normally provide water that has been filtered or boiled to make sure that it’s fit to be taken.
On the Annapurna Circuit, drinking water needs some planning in advance. There will be several natural water sources like mountains, streams, and taps. All these may seem clean and have a crystal appearance, with the water tempting you to take a sip; it is highly advised to purify the water using water purifying tablets, a portable water filter or StepPIN
Trekkers can carry water purification tablets purchased from pharmacies or shops in Kathmandu. If you intend to buy SteriPEN, it is advisable to do so in your home country. The use of plastic water bottles is prohibited in the entire Annapurna region and more so from Chhomrong. Therefore, do not bring plastic bottles since they will not be sold; instead, bring a thermos for refilling purposes.
To use STERI PENS Follow the steps below:
- Take clear water and fill a bottle.
- Now turn on the SteriPEN and insert it into the bottled water.
- Wait 48-90 seconds to stir the water until the light signals that purification is completed.
What To Expect On The Annapurna Circuit Trek?
The Annapurna Circuit Trek is an introduction to one of the most beautiful terrains in Nepal: the Annapurna Conservation Area. You will get views of some of the greatest mountains, including Annapurna I, II, III, IV, Machhapuchhre, Dhaulagiri, Gangapurna, Tukuche, Nilgiri, Tilicho Peak, and Manaslu.
The geography of the Annapurna region is also very diverse, and you will be going through the areas that are covered with subtropical forests and through the regions that are as dry as a desert. The trail passes through villages inhabited by the Gurung and Thakali people, and their customs and traditions are illustrated. These cheerful and friendly people invite you to join their life, to learn about their centuries-long culture, and perhaps, you will be interested in their legends and myths. It is a country of monasteries, and the spiritual pulse of the Himalayas is very vigorous in this region.
Accommodation During The Annapurna Circuit Trek
In the Annapurna Circuit Trekking, accommodation is arranged in basic twin sharing or triple sharing tea houses that offer homes away from homes to the trekkers after long day hikes. They also provide dormitory-style accommodation. Although the toilets are provided in common use, they are maintained to be as clean and appropriate as possible to make the customers comfortable.
Training Requirement for Annapurna Circuit Trek
Vast physical fitness is not required for the Annapurna Circuit Trek but some degree of training can improve your experience. Start light training a couple of weeks before your travel concentrating more on cardio and hiking. Do light exercises like walking or jogging 3-4 weeks before embarking on the trek.
Having prior trekking experience is an advantage but not a necessity. Most people who are fit can do the circuit, even without particular training. Nevertheless, some light training will enhance the pleasure of the journey and minimize the chances of tiredness during the trip and altitude sickness.
Mountain Sickness in The Annapurna Circuit Trek
AMS or Mountain sickness can be quite a problem on the Annapurna Circuit Trek since most of the trail is above 3000 meters. AMS is experienced when the body fails to adjust to the lower oxygen levels at high altitudes, and this results in conditions like headaches, nausea, and fatigue, among others. If not well handled, it may progress to more complex conditions such as HAPE and HACE; both are fatal.
How to Prevent AMS on the Annapurna Circuit Trek?
It is, therefore, very important to have measures in place to prevent mountain sickness during trekking. The essential preventative measures includes:
- Gradual accommodation by taking rest days at high altitudes
- Drinking a lot of water
- Consuming energy-rich foods
- Not taking alcohol and cigarettes.
- Descending soon if you experience the symptoms of mountain sickness.
What Is The Best Season for an Annapurna Circuit Trip?
Annapurna Circuit Trek is best done in Spring (March to May) or Autumn (September to October). These seasons provide a more reliable climate and impressive views. Nevertheless, these seasons come with a high number of trekkers. The trek is possible at any season, however, there are a lesser number of trekkers in the off-season. Note that it is impossible to predict mountain weather as it changes at any time. Although the peak seasons allow for overall better conditions.
Spring (March to May)
The Annapurna Circuit Trek is best done during spring since the temperatures are fairly mild, the weather is clear and the vegetation is green. When the snow has gone, the trails are more manageable and one gets to see the beautiful sights of the Rhododendrons, Magnolias and other flowers that cover the slopes. This season is relatively good for the enthusiasts of trekking as the hills and the valleys are adorned with green vegetation and flowers. Also, the season is good for trekking, because in spring there is not much rain, and the weather is calm and stable.
Autumn (September to November)
The Annapurna Circuit Trek can also be done in the autumn season which is recognized as the best season of the Annapurna Circuit Trek because of its clear sky, cool climate, and the clear view of mountains. When the monsoons are gone, there is no haze or dew, and the mountains of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri offer one of the better sights in Nepal. This is due to the friendly working temperature; compared to the very high working temperature in the daytime, it is considerably lower in the evening when trekking. The trails are also crowded with hikers because this is one of the best times to travel as the weather is good and visibility is quite good. For those who love ‘Cultural Tours’, ‘Autumn’ is perfect for it because people of the region celebrate otherwise or various festivals like Dashain and Tihar.

Food is available in local tea houses en route and the cuisine ranges from local Nepalese food to international food. There are simple Nepali dishes such as dal bhat, which is a lentil soup served with rice, and curry, momo which is a type of dumpling, noodles and international dishes such as pasta and pizza; and vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. The ingredients are fresh, and they are obtained from local production to provide delicious and healthy meals after the trekking activities.
Toilet and Shower In The Annapurna Circuit Trek Mountain Lodge
Tea houses have both the Western style and the squat style toilets, with the Western style being the more prevalent. To avoid getting cold, hot showers are encouraged, and they are offered by the teahouses either through hot bucket water or gas geysers. Nonetheless, these services require some fees estimated at $3-5 per person.
Trekkers should carry personal toiletries like toilet paper, soap, and shampoo. It is more comfortable and healthy for trekkers when they carry their items. Even though some basic things are provided along the way, carrying some of your own ensures that you stay comfortable and clean during the trip.
The mountain lodges are equipped with basic amenities but they are comfortable and serve the very basic needs of the trekkers. Remembering to bring such items will not only help improve your trekking experience but will also help you maintain personal hygiene in such remote Himalayan regions.
Mobile, Camera, Battery, Charge, and WIFI On The Trek
Charging:
There are very few charging facilities in teahouses. The charging points and Multiplug are not present in your rooms. You will have to use communal charging which is in the main hall. An extra $3-5 will be charged per full charge. You must also consider bringing a power bank for backup power so it won’t be a hassle.
WiFi:
WiFi is available in most Tea Houses, but since we will be in the mountains, WiFi can sometimes be unrealiable. It is usually an additional $3-5 to use WiFi. If you need a more reliable connection or for emergency communication, it is recommended to purchase a local SIM card which often has better internet than the Tea Houses.
What Is The Highest Altitude of The Trek?
The Annapurna Circuit Trek, which is one of the most popular trekking routes in Nepal, goes up to the highest point of Thorong La Pass, which is 5,416 meters/17,769 feet. This part of the trek involves a high-altitude pass, which is, however, very exhausting but presents the trekkers with excellent views of the different Himalayan mountains.
Money Exchange in Kathmandu
In Kathmandu, it isn’t hard to find a quick and easy way to exchange currency. Visitors can change money at any hotel, bank, or one of the many currency exchange agencies located all over the Thamel district. It is worth noting that, in addition, Thamel has more than 1000 ATMs, facilitating access to the local currency. Most of the trekking companies further help in exchanging currencies. However, it isn’t a good idea to rely on services like that when going above the mountains, so make sure you have changed enough before heading forward. Please take this into consideration for your planning.
Trek Annapurna Circuit Difficulty Level
The Annapurna circuit trek is generally categorized as a moderate to challenging trek because of the rough and steep terrain and heights it passes through. One of the largest problems is the climb to Thorong La Pass, which has an elevation of 5,416 meters (17,769 feet). The high-altitude crossing is not just an endurance feat but also a climbers’ choreographed step across that must be approached with caution in order to avoid the effects of high-altitude sickness. The complication of the terrain that includes the typically green and sometimes very wet subtropical zone and the dry alpine zone also presents a challenge, making the trek exciting and fulfilling for the trekker.
It is estimated that trekkers have to walk for 6 to 7 hours every day, crossing difficult terrains that demand both strength and willpower. The alternating steep climbs and drops and the changeable weather in the mountains require one to be in good physical shape. Cardiovascular training, as well as strength-building training, are essential for those intending to undertake this trek. Still, the landscapes of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range and the cultural difference are more than enough to compensate for the hardships of the trek.
How are the Trails of Annapurna Circuit Trek?
The Annapurna Circuit Trek has numerous trail conditions. Travelers will be crossing the bridges that are constructed with local wood. The trail is steep up and down as you trek towards Thorong La Pass, which is the highest point of the trek. Likewise, the descent begins once you have crossed the Thorong la Pass. The trails also keep on alternating while heading upwards on one day; you head downwards on another day. As such, lush green hills and valleys will accompany you throughout your journey. Additionally, villages with Buddhist locals reside in them allowing trekkers to witness the unique Buddhist and Tibetan culture, traditions, and religion.
Typical day on The Annapurna Circuit Trek
While the scenery and mountain views change daily, the routine remains familiar. The trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar that takes 6-8 hours. Trekking starts the next morning. Each day you are up early, about 7 am, for breakfast at the teahouse. After it’s time to pack your day bag with essentials (water, camera, sunscreen, etc.) give your duffel bag to the porter by 7:45 am.
At 8 am you’ll hit the trail for several hours in a trek with your guide. There’s plenty of time along this easy-going part of each day’s walk for looking around or enjoying lively conversation among guides, porters, or fellow trekkers while walking through villages or on trails. Once you reach the teahouse for the night, dinner is at around 7 pm.
Weather in the Annapurna Circuit Himalaya trek
The weather in the mountains is unstable and generally changes at any time. The peak trekking periods are during spring and autumn. Winter treks are possible but in the Monsoon season, the trek is very difficult.
January
There is a drop in temperature in the month of January in Annapurna Circuit. The snow level is also high towards the high altitudes, where crossing the Thorong La Pass can be a challenge. The lower altitude regions are also cold, but not unbearably.
February
The weather during February is almost the same but the cold is not as harsh as January. Still at high altitudes, recently fallen snow can be expected. The afternoons are sunny and clear with the best visibility ever experienced.
March
March is the first month of spring. The temperature begins to rise very gradually during this time. The lower altitude Rhododendron trees begin to blossom. The trekking environment is fun every day and more and more people are trekking into the hiking trails.
April
The month of April usually has pleasant and tolerable temperatures across the Annapurna Circuit. This month also comes with good visibility and beautiful ranges, making it ideal for hikes and walks.
May
May is warm and marks the end of spring. The weather remains stable, but it starts getting hotter at lower elevations. Snow has mostly disappeared from the high trails, and flowers are in full bloom. Trekking is enjoyable, though pre-monsoon showers may begin toward the end of the month.
June
This is when the monsoon starts. Humidity rises as temperatures increase in many lower areas. There will be mud on your way ahead while you navigate through foggy paths.
July
Treks are hard this month because of heavy rains, landslides, and leeches.
August
Even though hiking can be done in regions like Mustang that lie in rain shadow areas, August still follows the monsoon pattern characterized by cloudy sky and incessant rains.
September
By September end, the monsoon is gone; bringing about clearer skies and settled weather conditions. The time for trekking thus becomes very favorable though some trails in the first week may remain wet.
October
October is an exceptional month for trekking with its balanced temperatures and better sighting range. While the trails might be thronged with numerous trekkers, one can smoothly cross through Thorong La Pass in pleasant climatic conditions.
November
Weather patterns are consistent, the cold air is pleasant along with the clear skies observed in November. However, it gets cold, especially in higher elevation areas but the skies are good and visibility is not compromised. This is thus the perfect month for trekking since there will be no heavy snowfall in the mountains yet.
December
With December comes lower temperatures and snowfall possibilities at higher altitudes. Early in the month, there are not many people on the paths. Hiking along these paths can be done if one has appropriate cold clothing; however, by later months Thorong La Pass may become inaccessible due to snow accumulation.
Travel and Trekking Insurance in the High-Altitude
If you are going on the Annapurna Circuit trek in Nepal, trekking insurance is very important and cannot be ignored. This travel insurance generally covers the costs of helicopter evacuations, medical emergencies, and the safety of the luggage. It is very difficult and expensive to deal with any unforeseen occurrences in the absence of travel medical insurance. Make sure your requirements cover high-altitude trekking and rescue by helicopter. This kind of insurance allows concentrating on the beautiful views of the Himalayas rather than worrying. Therefore opt for proper trekking insurance coverage prior to starting on this trip.
Nepal Visa Information
Tourist visas are issued at the Tribhuvan International Airport and the land borders of Nepal upon arrival in the country. Visitors must bring a passport which should be valid for a period not less than 6 months, a passport-sized photo, and the required payment for the fee. It is recommended to carry the exact dollar amount.
Most tourists can get visas on arrival, but some country nationals may need to get approval in advance. Requirements for entry and other related concerns frequently change. Thus, always confirm any and all such information with up-to-date official websites.
Visa extensions are obtainable at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu or at any other approved areas if travelers want to remain longer than the time given in the initial visa.
Be sure to have blank pages on your passport for any visa stamp. Otherwise, entry may be refused or may cause problems with the immigration officers in Nepal.
Tipping - Tips to the Guide and Porter
You should tip the guide and porter after you end your trek. It is a way to thank them for their excellent service. There is no fixed amount of tips you have to give. It depends upon how much you like their service and how satisfied you are with their service. Tipping should be whatever you would like to offer, however the very fact is that it’s expected and sort of respectful because they’re putting more effort into carrying your luggage, guiding you on your route, explaining about Nepal culture, and lots of more.
