The Poon Hill Trek to Annapurna is a perfect combination of nature and people’s hospitality that is why it is one of the most popular treks in Nepal. While moving through the forests, fields, and the villages you will have the opportunity to enjoy stunning views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. This trek is particularly famous for the view of sunrise from Poon Hill when the first rays of the sun climbs up the Himalayas painting its peaks in golden light, a sight that you take with you forever.

From a cultural perspective, the trek involves understanding of the culture and lifestyle of the local Gurung and Magar people. During your trek you will be visiting through the villages like Ghandruk and Ghorepani where you will get to see the true Nepalese people and their culture, traditions and celebrations. This is so because the terrain and routes used are actual stone paved paths; the houses people live in are local traditional houses and the tea stops are at local tea houses all of which gives the trek not only a mountain adventure but also a cultural one.

In addition, the Annapurna Poon Hill Trek is also a treat to the lovers of nature because the trek goes through thick forests of rhododendron which blooms in a range of colors in spring season. The variety of plants and animals combined with the scenic beauty make the environment very peaceful hence enabling the trekkers to be close to nature. The Annapurna Poon Hill Trek is an ideal choice for the first-timers as well as the most experienced trekkers since it is the blend of natural beauty and cultural wealth that is impossible to be overshadowed by anything else.

The local magar villagers welcome the trekkers with a taste of the local food and hospitality of the mountain folks.

Poon Hill

The trekking highlight is reached at Poon Hill, at an altitude of 3210 meters. Trip PlanExpand all

After you have arrived at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you will be welcomed by our representative and escorted to your hotel for a night stay. On the first day, you can also visit the most important sightseeing landmarks of Kathmandu like Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple) and the holiest temple of Hindus, Pashupatinath.

Besides, you can discover the cultural value of the ancient cities of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan with their Durbar Squares. All in all, you can experience the Newari culture, life, and get to know the local people.

Traveling from Kathmandu to Pokhara on the second day of the Annapurna Poon Hill Trek is an amazing trip that includes stunning scenery and traditions of the people. It takes around 6-7 hours drive to reach Pokhara from the capital city.

The geography of the country is quite diverse and as soon as you step out of the city of Kathmandu the roads turn into hills, valleys and terraces. The Prithvi Highway is serpentine and provides good views of Nepalese village and temple cultures, suspension bridges etc. During this journey you will cross through the enchanting villages located in the Dhading and Tanahun District.

The latter part of the journey is far more scenic and once you enter Pokhara the first sight of the Himalayas, the Annapurnas are breathtaking. Despite the length of the journey and sometimes rather rough roads, beautiful river valleys are observed and the view of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain) is just a promise of the wonderful arrival to a city of lakes – Pokhara – the city of adventures and spirituality.

Our journey starts with a drive from Pokhara to Nayapul that takes 1 hour and 20 minutes. The drive has spectacular views of the hills and paddy fields which excites one for the journey ahead. Upon reaching Nayapul, we start trekking around beautiful Nepali villages and terraced fields and reach Birethanti, a beautiful village, in no time. The trail gets easier as it goes through green meadows, forests, and small villages with fresh mountain and valley views. The most difficult climb of the day is without a doubt the more than 3,000 steps from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri which takes approximately two hours. We then reach the Ulleri tea houses and have a rest followed by an overnight stay.

The hike from Ulleri to Ghorepani is considered as the basic steps to explore the beauty of Annapurna region during the Annapurna Poon Hill Trek. While climbing up from Ulleri, the breathtaking views of giant mountains – Annapurna, Hiunchuli and Dhaulagiri are a feast to the eyes. It passes through a beautiful rhododendron zone, and here the flowers in their full bloom look all the more beautiful when compared to the snowy mountains in the backdrop. On the way, you can peek at other famous mountains including Machhapuchhre, Dhampus and Barah Sikhar, all of which present different beauty of the world’s creation. Upon arriving at Ghorepani one can feel the hospitality of the local tea houses and enjoy a delicious meal after a day of trekking. It is a beautiful village where one can spend the night before the beautiful sunrise in the Himalayan range is experienced the following morning.

The fifth day of the Annapurna Poon Hill Trek takes us to one of the most beautiful viewpoints; Poon Hill and then Tadapani which makes it worth it. It starts early in the morning with a comparatively easy and short hike to Poon Hill that gives a stunning view of the Annapurna Himalayan range. This vantage point is famous to view the Himalayan range of Annapurna I to IV, Annapurna south, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, and Nilgiri as well, all these seen in a single view that is more than 16 peaks. From Poon Hill back to Ghorepani breakfast and trek to Tadapani is a long day walk which starts early in the morning passing through the sunrise at Poon hill and reaching Tadapani at 2,630 meters (8,630 feet). There is a stone trail right from Ghandruk to Tadapani which goes through thick forests of rhododendrons and the beautiful village of Bandthanti.

From Tadapani to Ghandruk, the trail is full of stunning views of the landscape and wonderful opportunity to experience the local culture. From the dense forest of Rhododendrons the view descends and the mountains of Annapurna and Machapuchare greet you with their snowy peaks shining in the sun.

The trail is not very narrow but still peaceful and it is quite easy to get close to the landscape. The tweeting of birds and the sound of leaves blowing in the wind gives the environment a serene feel which is rather soothing.

On reaching Ghandruk, what you get is a typical Gurung cultural village which is famous for its hospitality. The combination of stone paved roads with the stone houses and roofs made of slates gives the village a totally historic feel.

Beginning from Ghandruk, the trek takes you through the fascinating forests, cultivated lands and calm villages. The trail provides a constantly varying scenery covered with greenery and the sights of the Himalayas in the north. On this trek's last day, you have to walk 3 hours from Ghandruk on the pitch to Nayapul. If you are not willing to walk, then you can board the local transportation from Ghandruk to Nayapul.

From Nayapul, we take a bus or private vehicle that brings us to Pokhara which is a city famous for the beautiful lakes and mountains. We reach Pokhara and check into a good hotel which is quite relaxing after the completion of the Annapurna Poon Hill Trek.

Now, on the eighth day of the Annapurna Poon Hill Trek, we retrace our way back to Kathmandu via Prithivi Highway. We leave Pokhara early in the morning, setting off on a 6-7 hours long ride through Tanahun and Dhading District.

We traverse through the terraced fields, small towns, nearby Marsyangdi and Trishuli River before stepping into the valley. Upon reaching Kathmandu, we will head towards our respective hotel for overnight stay.

Today is the last day of your stay in Nepal. Our representative will help you escort to Tribhuvan International Airport from where you will onboard a flight to your home country.

Differences Between Solo Trek, Private Trek, Group trek and Family Trek

Solo Trek

Solo trek provides the highest level of independence and flexibility. You trek solo with the help of a guide and/or a porter. This means you can take your time, reorganize the itinerary whenever you want, and savor every bit of the journey. For example, you can spare a few more days to cover those appealing sections or extend the 9-day trek to 10 or even a 12-day trek, if you wish.

Private Trek

Private treks are designed for a small group of friends or family members. You are free to choose the departure date and change the program to the interests of your group. Surely this means that you can include or exclude places, and change the length of a trekking tour. Private treks combine companionship with sufficient personalization that they are suitable for those who want to enjoy traveling with their loved ones.

Group Trek

Group treks are a gathering of 2-10 travelers from different parts of the world. The departure dates and the itineraries are fixed so you have a planned schedule to stick to and bond on your way to the mountains. There will be other travelers who will be traveling with you, co-existing with you throughout the trek, hence more opportunities for socializing, meeting new people exchanging cultures, and also sharing experiences as adventurers.

Family Trek

Family treks are tailored to the special requirements of the travel of families with children, seniors, and people with disabilities. Safety, relaxation, and freedom are prioritized in such treks. Guides are trained and experienced in handling family groups and can alter the pace for all the members. Family treks can include options such as free days or other engaging activities. Such treks offer a very friendly environment for family and those who have varying levels of fitness so that everyone can participate in the trekking endeavors as a group.

Trekkers need to be open-minded about the accommodation because such factors are what define the real trekking experience in the Annapurna region.

There is not much that one is likely to enjoy in terms of amenities, but the small and intimate setting as well as the welcoming nature of the hosts are a big plus. Most of the tea houses also have the dining area with seating space to accommodate trekkers and other travelers, and they serve heavy meals where trekkers can share their experiences with other people.

Altitude Sickness and Prevention On The Trek

Annapurna Poon Hill Trek altitude wise is not very much prone to altitude related sickness compared to other treks like Annapurna Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit Trek, however, it is better to take some precautions especially if it is the first time one is being involved in a trek. The viewpoint of Poon Hill at an altitude of 3,210 meters and despite this height is not very high one might have some breathing difficulties due to low oxygen levels. The symptoms that are associated with this include headache, dizziness and shortness of breath whenever the body is not in harmony with the environment.

How To Prevent Mountain Sickness?

In order to prevent altitude sickness; one should not be in a hurry and should take some time on the trek so that the body can be acclimatized to the new altitude. Alcohol and smoking should not be taken during the trek since they make the symptoms of the disease worse.

Drinking water on the Annapurna Poon Hill Trekking

Safe drinking water is provided at all points of the Annapurna Poon Hill Trek. Filling of boiled water, or serving any kind of filtered water is available at the teahouses and guesthouses on the way. To prevent any kind of illness, we advise you to drink purified water. You can fill up your bottle from the taps and use the SteriPen water purification unit, or the purification tablets. In case you need purification tablets during the tour, we advise you to buy them in advance from marts in Kathmandu and Pokhara rather than on the spot. A better option would be to buy a SteriPen in your home country.

Travelers cannot take plastic in the Annapurna region. Plastic water bottles are only permitted up to Ghorepani. After this settlement, environmental conservation practices prohibit the use of plastic bottles. As a result, carry a water bottle that can be filled during the hikes. You get a visa from Tribhuvan International Airport or from different land border entries. A visa's price would be determined by time factors. The same kind of visa can also be pre-obtained from the Nepalese embassies or consulates. Please make sure you have all the documents, otherwise, it may be problematic for you upon arrival.

Tipping - Tips to the guide and porter

You should give the guide and porter tips after you are done with your trekking. The amount to be given as a tip isn't fixed; it totally depends upon your liking. Giving out a tip means giving an appreciation of the service provided by the porter or guide. It is one way to show your appreciation-a thank-you approach. Tipping is expected and respectful as they go the extra mile, carrying your luggage, guiding you, explaining Nepali culture, and many more. Tip what you feel is appropriate to show your appreciation for their hard work and dedication throughout your trek.

Trekking Feedback

Happyland Treks will host a formal dinner in Kathmandu for the trekkers after the trip is over. A great opportunity to share about the trek and suggestions regarding the trips for us to learn and improve. We would be highly obliged if you could leave a review on our Google Review, TripAdvisor Review, or directly on our website.

Your review becomes invaluable to us; it always guides future trekkers to plan their adventures. We look forward to hearing about your thoughts and experiences over dinner with us and then reading them online in the reviews. Thanks for choosing Happyland Treks, and we look forward to seeing you again on another adventure soon.
