Khopra Danda Trek is one of the most exquisite treks in Nepal's Annapurna region, which is known for its scenic beauty. This trek is a perfect symmetry of culture and nature, which begins in a popular, busy town called Pokhara. Trekkers face hardships to reach heights worth going to, in this case, 3,660 meters (12,250 feet) Khopra Danda. The trek also boasts outstanding views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges.

The oddly shaped triangle Khopra Danda Trek has distinct trails, which tend to be off the beaten path enabling a serene trekking experience, unlike more famous routes such as the Ghorepani Poon Hill. Trekking packages nearly always take 8 to 10 days to complete, and this covers and some short sections through green rhododendron woodlands, terraced farmland, and towns occupied by Gurung and Magar ethnicities.

Reaching Khopra Danda is one such trek, where one can experience breathtaking views of the rising and setting sun against the Himalayas mountains and trek to a mythological place called Khayer Lake, also famous in this region. In addition, the trek is enriched with chances of spotting a few animals and vegetation within the radial range.

This hike is best for those fit enough to perform a moderate hike and can be done throughout the year. However, the best general skies and weather are seen in spring and autumn. Most importantly, Khopra Danda Trek is the place that fits the best for those seeking the thrill of adventure along with cultural and picturesque views.

Highlights of the Trek

  • Scenic drive to Pokhara, alongside Trishuli and Marsyangdi river.
  • Soak in the hot springs in Jhinu Danda.
  • Magnificent views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massif from Ghandruk Village.
  • Taste the famous Thakali Khana set in Gurung villages.
  • Visit Khopra Lake, one of the pristine watersheds in Nepal.
  • Explore Pokhara and lakeside.

Jhinu Danda (1780m) Hot Spring

Jhinu Danda is one of the most popular spots near the Annapurna treks because of its natural hot spring. The hot water flows via the Annapurna Base Camp, which can be reached within a 25-minute downhill walk from Jhinu Danda village. It is a perfect opportunity for tired trekkers to dip and relax their stressed muscles. You need to climb up for around 30-40 minutes and do climbing after bathing.

Khopra Danda (3660m)

Khopra Danda is a high-altitude ridge that offers trekkers spectacular views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. With far less traffic than the nearby Poon Hill trek, Khopra Danda is an ideal spot to take in panoramic sunrises and sunsets. At 3660 meters, it’s far less crowded than nearby routes, so you’ll likely have this place all to yourself. The trail leads you further along Khopra Ridge, where you can reach Khopra Lake for stunning photographs of crystal-clear lakes and snow-dusted Himalayan peaks.

Khopra Lake

Khopra Lake is a beautiful still-water lake at 4,600 meters. It is situated near Khopra Danda in between snowy peaks. The locals believe that the sacred water of this lake brings prosperity and good luck to anyone who visits it. It’s surreal how the still water reflects all the surrounding mountains perfectly. You will find yourself in complete isolation, surrounded by nothing but lush alpine meadows and wildflowers with mountain ranges all around you. This trail, its numerous flora and fauna, and a phenomenal view on each turn make it a perfect place for peace-seeking travelers.

Ghandruk (1940m)

The village proudly boasts of its slate-roofed houses, well-paved streets, and panoramic views of Annapurna South, adding more to the authenticity and beauty that surely will win the hearts of its visitors. Ghandruk is a culturally rich village, for which there is a museum explaining its history, customs, and traditional attire that depict the Gurung people. Besides that, the monastery and schools in Ghandruk make it still lively, ideal to be visited by trekkers for exploration of the local culture and unwinding amidst spectacular mountain scenery.

Itinerary
Trip PlanExpand all

The first day is the day of your arrival in Kathmandu, where our team will be waiting for you at the airport with the ever-pleasant Nepali culture. You will be transferred to your hotel by private vehicle and get a brief view of the city's age-old cultures and practices. The day will be wrapped up by a briefing about your trekking schedule to get yourself well prepared for the upcoming days.

Today, we will travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara on a tourist bus. There are numerous turns along the way, where it is expected to see terraced farms, small settlements, and green scenery, sometimes even the big Himalayan mountains in the background. We will pass through the Dhading and Tanahun districts alongside the Trishuli and Marsyangdi Rivers.

When you arrive at Pokhara, you forget everything as the glorious beauty of lakes and mountains awaits you. Check in to your hotel and spare a few moments to walk beside the beautiful Phewa Lake or sit at a café facing the lake. The evening is open to this lovely town in readiness for tomorrow’s trek.

A private vehicle will pick us up from Pokhara and take us to Phedi, a drive lasting 40 minutes and full of beautiful green views. From Phedi, we ascend to Deurali, characterized with greenery and largely terracing hillsides. This trek will not only present the nearby range of the Annapurna but also some exciting local scenes.

From here, we start a steep climb upwards to Deurali at 2080m and check into a teahouse where lunch will be served amidst stunning views. At this point, this place seems to be the greatest for resting, taking in fresh air from the mountains and getting ready for more work to come on the trek.

Today, the trail leads from Deurali towards Jhinu Danda, which is fulfilling and covers breathtaking scenery. As we go deep inside the jungles and the rhododendron bushes, we watch out for the distinctive fauna and beautiful valleys.

Upon reaching Jhinu Danda, we will take a short stroll to the hot springs at the far end after checking into our lodge. You can relax and soak your body in these amazingly soothing, natural, warm waters. It will be a gratifying experience, detoxifying both the body and the mind. Dinner will be served, and the guests will relax in their respective rooms.

Today's trek to Tadapani will be a steep climb via lush green forests of pine, oak and rhododendron beneath the spectacular backdrop of the Annapurna and Machapuchare (Fishtail) Mountains. The trail has its ups and downs, along with some chilled air as you are high in the mountains now, but it all adds to an excellent day with lots to smile about.

On arrival at Tadapani, we will head for the tea house lodge, where we will stay tonight before enjoying a relaxing time on the hillside, looking down at the lodge and view, followed by a nice warm meal together with your fellow trekkers.

From Tadapani, we start the trek on a winding path through the highland forest until it eventually places us at Bayeli Kharka at 3,450m for our overnight stop. The higher we climb on this ascent, the more it takes us through the alpine forest until glimpses of faraway snow-capped mountains become visible. The wildness of the journey continues as it climbs onto a rough and rugged country to get a close view of the massive west face of Dhaulagiri I, putting ourselves below the gigantic western ice fall from the Dhaulagiri-Manapathi Himal wall. Upon arrival, we will be escorted to a beautiful tea house with a beautiful view of the surrounding mountain ranges. The rest of the day, henceforth, was spent relaxing over here amidst nature and star-gazing-in particular, above the Himalayas.

Today there will be a hike from Bayeli Kharka to the viewpoint at Khopra Danda; surreal views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges can be seen en route. Upon arrival at Khopra Danda, which stands tall at 3660 meters, the first thing we do is check into our lodge that lies on this picturesque hill.

The best views of the Himalayas can be seen here. Wind up by relaxing and prepare for Khopra Lake the next day, as there is no better rest than at Khopra Danda, which has great views of the mountains.

It's another interesting day of adventure to the brilliance of high-altitude mountain lakes in the Himalayas- the Khopra Lake. We wake up early in the morning to try to wish that the trails are easy and the views appropriate while we make our way up to the lake that is regarded as the saddest in the locality.

First, relish this beautiful nature; then, again, go to Khopra Danda for another night. A day of beautiful adventure and tranquility in this lovely side of Nepal.

Today we again descend to Khopra Danda for going back towards Bayeli Kharka.Again, the same route will be followed, opposite the previous views. This way, one is taken to a different amazing view of mountain peaks, snow-capped across the horizon. Later, we went down to Bayeli Kharka for a night's sleep with hot food, recollecting our journey up to that time. Meanwhile, the cozy warmth of the lodge will keep you far away from hustling on the street and is perfect for rest after another fulfilling day outside.

From Bayeli Kharka, we begin to make our way down to Ghandruk, a Gurung village and one of the most beautiful villages in this area. The route descends through woods and terraced fields before arriving at one of the ethnically richest villages of Nepal. You will be greeted with the friendliness of the Gurung at the village itself, and you will have enough time to wander around old houses lining the paved stone alleys of Ghandruk. It also provides an excellent vista of the mountain range, Annapurna, and portrays perfect beauty amalgamated with culture here in Ghandruk.

Today we will be doing the last stage of our trek, which is walking from Ghandruk to Nayapul. However, this is easy since it is done through terraced fields down the rivers, which, in turn, may be a nice way of saying goodbye to mountains. The last day of the trek from Ghandruk to Nayapul requires you to walk on the road for about three hours. You can also take a local vehicle from Ghandruk to Nayapul if you don't want to walk. Arriving in Nayapul, we will transfer using a private vehicle back to Pokhara. You shall get the chance to simply rest and take in the beauty of the town around the beautiful lakes or recover after the arduous trek.

Today, we will drive back to Kathmandu by tourist bus, which will take us through the countryside in the mid-western region. This easy-going bus ride allows one to think about past experiences and might also catch the sights that one has missed or could not see quite clearly during the previous trip. Arrive in Kathmandu, free and at leisure, to revisit your favorite sites or the colorful markets of the city. Overnight hotel.

This is almost the end of your journey; we will arrange a transfer to the international airport in Kathmandu for your flight.

Differences between solo trek, private trek, and group trek

Solo Trek

Trekking solo allows you to see the mountains wholly on your terms. You go at your own pace and set your schedule but are not committed to the group members' schedule. You'll have a personal guide and porter, so you won't miss support without freedom. That means one can easily extend or shorten the trek according to his will, taking 14 days instead of 12.

Private Trek

Privately, a trek becomes very flexible, and it's fully customizable. You do get to pick your date of departure, but besides that, you can modify it according to your group's interests, usually just adding some destination or taking an extra day to explore it. This kind of trek doesn't have any restrictions concerning group size; you are free to do it in peace, private, and at the pace that best suits you and your companions. It will be ideal for those coming as families or in groups of very close friends because it allows for a tailor-made itinerary for them, making decisions from the very beginning to the end in a quiet, private environment.

Group Trek

Group treks are a good opportunity to meet other trekkers from around the world in one group of 2-10 people. This is along with the set departure date and fixed itinerary for socially and economically feasible ways of trekking. This might mean abiding by the rules and itinerary of the group, but this is a great way to meet new people and share stories while enjoying incredible scenery with others. Group trekking in Nepal offers commonality and supportiveness from within and is a great opportunity to make friendships with other travelers of any age.

Family Trek

This family trek has been designed to offer comfort and safety to all ages and types of abilities. With kids, greater attention is put on security and care so that you can travel with great confidence. Guides have extensive experience in catering to the needs of your family, including any particular health needs, slower paces of family members, and customized itineraries to ensure that everyone gets the most out of the trek. This is a relaxed option of trekking whereby the family will personally care for each other safely while exploring the beautiful trails of Nepal.

Is Khopra Danda Trek safe for solo or female travelers?

The Khopra Danda Trek is safe and rewarding for solo women trekkers, though it is highly recommended by a local guide. Generally, Khopra Danda is not that crowded, the views are great, and it is secure if well-prepared and supported locally. HappLand Treks has been successfully leading solo travelers, including women, in various regions: Annapurna, Everest, and Langtang. According to years of experience, safety and direction become easier with a local guide, especially in remote areas. In that regard, both a local guide and an agency will provide full support to ensure safety in the case of female solo travelers who trek in the area of Khopra Danda.

Drinking water on the Khopra Danda Trekking

During the Khopra Danda Trek, drinking water is regularly available in guesthouses and teahouses, mostly boiled or filtered. Though we cannot guarantee the safety of tap water, water from taps is recommended to be filled and purified with either tablets or a Steripen. You can get purification tablets in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and other local shops. However, it's highly recommended that the Steripen be purchased well before your trip from your home country. Using a Steripen is easy:

  • Insert it into your bottle of water.
  • Turn it on.
  • Let its magic work for less than a minute, as safe hydration is maintained during the whole trek.

What to expect on the Khopra Danda Trek?

Dramatic landscapes, diverse wildlife, and an authentic Himalayan experience mark the fantastic Khopra Danda Trek. And rightly so, one should not expect many crowds, and besides, the off-beat trails lead to great panoramic views of the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Nilgiri peaks. The route consists of picturesque villages and terraced fields, and another interesting side trip is to holy Khayer Lake. The accommodations are simple, comfortable homestay accommodations, sampling community lodges and giving a peek into the local way of living. The trek is ideal for those who seek quiet trails with some spirit of adventure. This is a moderately experienced trekker's paradise as one gets to enjoy the beauty of this secluded area.

The rooms are very basic, with shared bathroom facilities, and most showers are out of the room. Note that your stay in Kathmandu is not included in this package cost for the trek. You, therefore, need to make your accommodation arrangements. Training requirement for Khopra Danda Trek

Khopra Danda Trek is a not-so-crowded, easy-to-moderate trek with rewarding views. Mainly fit people can handle this route. No training is required, but some light preparation makes it easier to handle 5-7 hours of daily trekking on steep trails. To do this, build up your endurance by regular walks, short hikes, or stair climbing in the weeks before your trek. Prior experience in trekking is advisable. Complete beginners can also do this trek easily.

Mountain sickness and prevention on the trek

Acute Mountain Sickness is one of the common symptoms of high-altitude trekking because of the reduced level of oxygen. Symptoms for AMS may range from headache, dizziness, and fatigue to nausea and shortness of breath. This AMS may affect trekkers of all fitness levels. If ignored, the symptoms may increase into severe symptoms like high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE) or high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE).

Preventing AMS on the Trek

  • Gradual acclimatization is an important factor to avoid AMS.
  • With small steps of climbing the mountains, the ascent should be planned so that the body gets enough time for acclimatization to lower oxygen levels.
  • Plenty of water intake can prevent dehydration since this factor aggravates the AMS situation.
  • Avoid the intake of alcohol and caffeine since that dehydrates your body.
  • Savor food items that are easily digestible and high-energy to help sustain energy levels.
  • Medicines like acetazolamide, generally known as Diamox, may prevent the occurrence of AMS.

What is the best season for Khopra Danda Trek?

It is possible to go trekking in Khopra Danda all year long. However, the best seasons for trekking are from March to May and September to October. While one sees more traffic on the trails in the peak seasons, the off-season could provide them with a much more solitary experience. The weather pattern in these mountains is notably changeable, altering dramatically from one moment to the next.

Spring-March to May: The weather is temperate, with clear mornings that give way to a few clouds in the afternoon. The Rhododendrons spill down the hillsides in blinding reds and pinks- each view truly spectacular. Nights are cool but manageable.

Monsoon (June to August): Not recommended due to continuous heavy rain and slippery trails. Besides, days remain cloudy enough to keep the mountain views hidden. However, the landscapes will be rich in greenery, and trekkers will not be that many to disturb your quiet communion with nature.

Autumn: Generally considered the best and most stable weather season, September and October present crystal-clear mountain views and comfortable temperatures. Expect busier trails and teahouses now with more trekkers.

Winter:Winter season consists of cold months from November to February and snows at high elevations. The skies are usually clear then. It offers brilliant mountain panorama views, but fewer facilities are open.

Equipment and trekking kit necessary for Khopra Danda Trek

For Khopra Danda Trek, you need a well-equipped trekking kit to ensure a safe and sound journey.

  • A good quality durable backpack (40-60 liters), a cold sleeping bag, moisture-wicking base layers, an insulating mid-layer (fleece or down), a waterproof/ windproof outer shell, sturdy hiking boots that are properly worn-in and comes over the ankle for better foot support on uneven trails.
  • Further, accessorize yourself with comfortable, light sports shoes/ trainers for night/lodge when you need to give rest to your feet from those hard-core hiking boots.
  • Use poles for better stability; it helps drastically in providing easier ascents & descents by sharing the load stress taken by your back and knees alone.
  • Lightweight sacks/packs of 15-20 Ltrs., a personal medical first aid kit, including some common medication band-aids, etc.
  • Don’t forget sunglasses/goggles(sun and snow protection), caps(sun protection), woolen hat(morning till evening), and fleece gloves.

Food during the Khopra Danda Trek

Every teahouse in each part of the Khopra Danda Trek has something special to make it different- that different- it's menu. The menu is simple and a combination of both local and Western dishes. The highly recommended meal that a trekker should not miss is Nepali Dal Bhat, a meal prepared with rice, lentil soup, and vegetables, with pickled side dishes. The foods may not taste the same as one gets used to in a city like Kathmandu, Pokhara or their home country, but they are hygienically prepared, presenting a real Nepalese food taste. This trekking adventure allows the taste buds to enjoy the local flavors, relieving energy on the trails.

Toilet and shower in the mountain lodge

In mountain lodges, both Western and squat toilets are available; however, the majority of toilets are Western style. The showers can also be used, but for that, hot showers can be provided by gas geysers or bucket water; however, the charges range from $3 to $5. For extra comfort, we prefer that you bring your personal toiletries like soaps, shampoos, and toilet paper. Having personal things with one is not only hygienic, but it adds extra comfort to a trekking mood. Although the facilities are basic, they do provide a certain comfort for lightening one's journey into the mountains.

Mobile, camera battery charge and WIFI on the trek

You cannot charge devices in your room because there is no arrangement for multiple plugs in teahouses. You can charge your gadgets in a communal area; that would cost somewhere between $3 to $5 for one charge. In addition, pack some spare batteries and a power bank.

Wifi is available in teahouses. However, you should expect performance to be spotty due to mountain wifi, which is unreliable. For Wifi service, you will have to pay an extra of about $3 to $5. However, buying a local SIM card would not be such a bad idea for better internet access, which helps make your productivity quite reliable for emergency calls and keeping in touch with your loved ones during your adventure.

What is the highest altitude of the Khopra Danda Trek?

The Khopra Danda Trek touches an altitude of approximately 4600 meters over Khopra Ridge, presenting great views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri peaks and an opportunity to be part of their special landscape and culture.

Money exchange in Kathmandu

Most money exchange options are available to travelers in Kathmandu. Trekkers can have the currency at a hotel or bank or inside the hustle-bustle area of Thamel, which has many money exchange counters. There are also over 1,000 ATMs around Thamel; drawing cash is an option. Your hotel or tour operator can help exchange money so that you have adequate local currency for your expenses. It should, however, be remembered that no exchange facility is available in the mountain range, and one should, therefore, plan and take due care not to face any inconvenience.

Khopra Danda Trek Difficulty level

The Khopra Danda Trek is considered a moderate to difficult trek. On the steep, narrow, and sometimes rugged trails, there are five to seven hours of walking each day. At about 3,660 meters or 12,007 feet at Khopra Ridge, trekkers may face some altitude effects, though acclimatization days mitigate risks. The trails involve a complete landscape variation-from rhododendron forests to rocky ridges with spectacular views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. Khopra Danda sees fewer trekkers than other areas of the Annapurnas, so the experience allows you to travel more deeply into the Nepalese countryside.

Weather in the Khopra Danda Trek

Weather does change with seasons, and changes can be very dramatic and quick in the mountains. Autumn, or from September to November, and spring, or from March to May, are normally the good months for trekking in these hills, with the weather being stable and clear. Winter can also be viable, though much colder, especially in higher-elevation areas, while the monsoon season from June to August can only offer heavy rains that will render trails slippery and poor in visibility.

January

This is usually a very cold month, especially at higher altitudes, with temperatures between -10°C to 10°C. Quite a lot of snow in the higher altitudes and not very good conditions for trekking either. Although the nights get extremely cold, this is a good time to go for mountain views because the sky is clear.

February

Still pretty cold in February, with temperatures between -8°C to 12°C. Though crisp, clear days ensure great visibility, you might still find most upper trails snowy and icy. It is pretty frosty with really cold nights in the morning, so you would need to wear warm gear for this time of year.

March

Already in spring, March is milder in temperature, between 0°C and 15°C. The flowers will start to bloom, the Skies will be clearer, the days will not be hot but clear, and generally, this is a very good time for trekking because the nights remain cooler and more pleasant.

April

April is one of the best months to trek because of its 5°C-20° C temperatures. Full blooms of rhododendrons can be seen during this time, offering excellent sets of views amidst mild weather. It gets warmer by day and comfortably cool at night.

May

The temperature ranges from 10°C to 22°C. Trails remain good for trekking, although humidity at the end of the month may reduce visibility. The late spring blooms dot the trails.

June

Starting in June, the monsoon sets in. Heavy rains begin, and the temperatures can range between 12°C and 20°C. The trail becomes very wet and slushy; the visibility turns poor, and the conditions make it a bit more challenging to hike.

July

Monsoons are at their peak, and so is rainfall. The temperature fluctuates between 15 degrees Celsius to 20 degrees Celsius and trails are very muddy, making it difficult to trek. Due to heavy clouding, visibility is also decreased, thus not a favorable time for trekking.

August

The weather remains wet and humid, but rainfall decreases towards the end of the month. Temperatures range from 15°C to 20°C. Trails are still muddy, and there is low visibility along most trails.

September

With the end of monsoon, the temperatures are between 10°C to 18°C. The trails dry up, and the skies are clear, offering you magnificent views of mountains. This month, people start visiting for trekking as everything looks lush and green.

October

October is perhaps the best month to do the Khopra Danda Trek in Nepal. The temperatures are cool 8°C (46°F) to mild 15°C (59°F), the weather is nice, and everything from views to visibility is excellent. With stable weather conditions, cool but not freezing temps and reduced rainfall compared to peak monsoon months, trekking in October is still one of the busier months on the trail.

November

November is a good month with temperatures between 5°C to 12°C. This is excellent concerning trekking conditions since it is clear with relatively cool temperatures. At the end of the month, the air gets crisper, and the trails become less crowded.

December

In December, cold weather can range from 0°C to 10 °C. Higher-altitude snowfalls may add some beauty but also more difficulty. Skies are clear and provide excellent mountain views, though nights are cold, especially at higher altitudes.

Travel and Trekking Insurance In the High-altitude

The insurance for traveling and trekking is absolutely and categorically a must for this 9-day high-altitude Khopra Danda Trek in Nepal. This special insurance will provide safety for one in case of an accident and soothe one's mind amidst the rugged Himalayas. Proper insurance cover might be lifesaving in emergencies, such as altitude sickness, injuries, and accidents requiring immediate evacuation by helicopters.

In a mountainous, remote area, such emergency evacuation costs and medical treatments can catastrophically reach amounts that are very hard to afford. Your policy should be fully covered against other risks, including medical expenses and luggage safety. Travel insurance is not optional. You must get it; otherwise, you will be open to a high financial burden when something goes wrong.

How are the Trails of Khopra Danda Trek?

Kopra Danda Trek offers the greatest trekking experiences on its trails. You will cross many local wooden bridges while you move en route through the landscape. Topography contains steep ascents uphill to Khopra Danda and gentle slopes down to the route. Ups and downs make your journey exciting, passing through the green hills and valleys. The road from Ghandruk onwards up to Nayapul will be mixed, with both graveled and pitched roads. The whole span of your trek will be graced with the smiling faces of the locals greeting you, in addition to the cultural wealth of the tour. The last day will find you starting the upward trek on Nayapul road for three hours, although local transportation is available here.

Nepal visa information

All visitors to Nepal must carry valid visa documents. The passport to be carried should have its validity for at least six months beyond the date when that person intends to leave Nepal, and also with any blank pages available in this passport. Requirements are a photo passport size and a precise amount in USD for a visa. While most visitors can obtain visas on arrival, some nationalities require pre-approval. Note that enforcement of the rules varies, and regulations may change, so check requirements through official channels before travel. For extensions, go to the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu.

Tipping - Tips to the guide and porter

Tipping your guide and porter is a must at the end of the trekking. In addition, it is considered one of the good and meaningful ways to show thankfulness for their support and expertise throughout the trek, as there is no fixed amount for tipping; the decision on how much to give lies totally upon you. Show appreciation and respect for the efforts they've been extending by showing it in your farewell tip.

Trekking Feedback

Later on, after your trek, a dinner party will be organized in Kathmandu by Happyland Trek Company. You can share all of your experiences with others about the trek and also tell us about problems you faced during the treks.
