The Poon Hill Trek via Hot Springs is a wonderful opportunity to experience the natural beauty, culture and tranquillity of the Annapurna region in a relatively short period. This 5-7 day trek provides an ideal mix of breathtaking mountain panoramas, encounters with local culture and the refreshing approach to traditional cleansing, taking a dip in one of Mother Earth's created hot springs. Starting from the vibrant lake-side town of Pokhara, the trail winds through stunning rhododendron forests, traditional Gurung villages perched on terraced hillsides, and cultivated fields offering up-close views of some of the highest peaks on Earth, including Annapurna I (8,091 meters), Dhaulagiri (8,167 meters) and Machapuchare 'Fish Tail' Mountain.

One of the trek’s highlights is a predawn excursion to Poon Hill (3,210 meters), famous for its breathtaking vistas. Just as dawn breaks over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, trekkers glimpse thousands of snow capped peaks piercing the morning mist, putting the ultimate meaning into a Himalayan “photographic opportunity.” During our descent, we’ll stop at Jhinu Danda to soak in some of Nepal’s therapeutic hot springs. There’s no better way to end a day of hiking than by bathing in steamy pools while gazing up at jagged peaks towering above terraced rice fields.

Highlights

  • Sunrise greets you with panoramic views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Machapuchare from the summit of Poon Hill (3,210m).
  • Trek through enchanting rhododendron forests, terraced fields and welcoming villages, including Ghorepani and Tadapani.
  • Soak in the natural hot springs at Jhinu Danda to relax your muscles after a long day of trekking. Gain an insight into the rich culture of the Gurung and Magar communities en route.
  • Suitable for both first-time trekkers and well-experienced trekkers because this trek is filled with the most beautiful snow peaks and views all over the place along the trek dominated by Annapurna Giant and Dhaulagiri ranges.
  • Trek starts and finishes at the beautiful lake city of Pokhara with a mountain (Himalayan) view.

Unforgettable Stops on the Easy Poon Hill Trek via Hot Springs

Poon Hill

Poon Hill, at 3,210 meters, is perhaps the most famous trekking viewpoint in the Annapurna region. On an early morning hike, the sunrise over Himalayan giants can be remarkable. Mountains visible from Poon Hill include Annapurna South, Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri and Machapuchhre, also known as "Fishtail." The view of the sun's first light hitting these great peaks is one of many highlights of the trek.

Ghandruk

Ghandruk is a big, old and one of the most interesting villages, rich in culture around the Annapurna region. It is at an altitude of 1,940 meters and inhabited by Gurung people. There is a museum well worth an hour program visit that introduces the visitor to the local flora and fauna, and traditional customs and practices are also on display. The inhabitants of this unique small hillside village are renowned for their contribution to the British Army Gurkha regiment. There is also a neat Buddhist monastery, which you can visit as part of your afternoon tour after arriving here. The view over Annapurna South and Machapuchhre from Ghandruk is very nice. Homestay facilities are also available, which helps you to know more about their local tradition.

Jinu Hot Spring

Jinu Hot Spring, a naturally occurring hot spring by the river, is 25 minutes downhill. The water is heated by a glacier that originates from Annapurna Base Camp. You will have to descend and then ascend for about 30-40 minutes from your accommodation to the hot spring. Jinu hot springs can be very refreshing, especially after days of hard trekking.

Itinerary
Trip PlanExpand all

You will be received by our representative upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, who will later transfer you to the hotel. Once you are ready, depending on the arrival time, you will go to explore the culture of vibrant Kathmandu: explore around, perhaps visit one of the listed UNESCO sites-Kathmandu Durbar Square or Swayambhu Temple.

This is also the best time for a gear check and meeting with your trekking guide to discuss the exciting journey ahead. With the start of your Nepal trekking and hiking to Annapurna just around the corner, you will prepare for the trek and finalize the best travel option to reach Pokhara, either by road or a short 20-25 minute flight.

From Kathmandu, it's a drive uphill on the Prithvi Highway with rewarding views of the Trishuli River and glimpses of the Nepalese countryside. The road winds itself through green mountain sides and river valleys.

One may also opt for a short flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara (35 minutes). The highways have their adventures: long descents, mind-blowing vistas, small villages and terraced fields passing by. Upon arrival in Pokhara, you are then transferred to your hotel for leisure time, followed by trekking and hiking in the Annapurna region the next day.

It’s a short one-hour drive to Nayapul from Pokhara. After completing the permit formalities you’ll begin your trek by following the dirt road along with the river to Tikhedhunga. The trail becomes more challenging as you climb up the 3,000-step staircase to Ulleri. All day, you’ll be greeted by views of Annapurna South and Himchuli and see how life is in a traditional Gurung village called Ulleri. The trail through beautiful forests is both rewarding and challenging. You will arrive in time for dinner at Ulleri.

Post breakfast at 7 AM, we start the trek at 8 AM. After crossing through lush jungles and refreshing waterfalls, we first reach Nangge Thanti (2430 M), i.e., our lunch point (After 3 hours of trek). Some trekkers skip their lunch to reach Ghorepani in time and explore around in leisure. Post lunch, you still need to trek for another 2 hours to reach Ghorepani. The pace is relaxed so that you can enjoy all the natural beauty around you as you keep ascending. Ghore means ‘horse,’ and Pani means ‘water.’ Ghorepani consists of two villages: lower and upper. The lower villages have check posts. Hiking to Poonhill and exploring the vibrant surroundings of the village will be an exciting experience.

You will wake up early in the morning and ascend to Poon Hill for a magnificent sunrise view. A strenuous climb, but it’s worth seeing the majestic snow-capped peaks of Annapurna II, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain), Dhaulagiri and other surrounding peaks. After enjoying a cup of hot tea or coffee, you will descend back to Ghorepani for your breakfast, then continue your trek through dense rhododendron & Oak forests with one of the best panoramic views over hills and valleys. The first few hours of trails gently descend through Deurali & Chitre, and finally descending along the suspension bridge takes you to Banthanti; an onward hour walk amidst the jungle furthermost part with a gradual downhill brings you to Tadapani, where you'll stay overnight.

Today's trek is downhill walking to Kimron Khola and uphill to the tranquil forest of rhododendron, bamboo, and oak upwards to Chomrong Village. Later in the day, you will be heading downhill to Jhinu Danda, a quiet village famous for its nearby hot springs, which are super relaxing-soothing your muscles after this long day. From just wanting to have a quick soak to wanting to rest a bit longer, the hot springs are refreshing and give great scenery. Later on, overnight peacefully at Jhinu Danda, recollecting all your lifelong memories of Nepal trekking and hiking.

It is a slow paced and full-day trek, and thus, the route uphill follows the Modi Khola River upwards along stretches of greenery and peaceful landscapes. The trail cuts across terrace farms and thick forests of rhododendrons to make for a soft journey with glimpses of Jhinu Danda and Chhomrong at places. Ghandruk is such a beautiful village, originally enshrining traditional Gurung culture; it gets wild on its stone pathways while glimpsing the cultural attractions like the Gurung museum and Buddhist monastery. It is one of the iconic villages in the Annapurna region and also provides an insight into the way locals live their lives. This is a classical culmination of trekking adventure here in Nepal, where nature and culture combine.

Today will be an easy day as you will be riding from Ghandruk to Syaulibazar. Nice scene at the beginning of the day along with lush valleys and terracing rice fields will accompany you. Great views along the trail of Village Ghandruk and Modi Khola River will be simply brilliant. For this part of the journey deeper, the trekking group will hike via a mixture of gravel and paved roads for around three hours. Otherwise, the duration of 3 hours also can be shorter with local transportation from Ghandruk to Nayapul. Finally, upon arrival at Nayapul, there is another drive awaiting you; that is, by private jeep or by local transportation. The route actually to Pokhara is simply really, very beautiful. Arrive and check-in at the hotel in Pokhara, explore Phewa Lake or do some adventure activities. Overnight stay at Hotel in Pokhara.

Start your day with a lovely breakfast in Pokhara and take a scenic drive back to Kathmandu. En route, you will have an opportunity to see the Trishuli River, along with the local Nepalese country lifestyle, which is still unaffected by modernity. The drive can be about 7-8 hours long via road but you can also fly, giving you more time for sightseeing in both Kathmandu and Pokhara. On arrival at Kathmandu city centre, transfer to hotel and rest of day leisure for shopping or visiting cultural sights in the city centre.

Ghorepani and Poon Hill Hiking is over today. After morning breakfast as per planned time either to proceed to final departure onward destination or take the opportunity to relax till noon or optionally decide upon sightseeing tours around Kathmandu.

Differences between solo trek, private trek, and group trek

Solo Trek

The ultimate freedom and flexibility are backed up by going on a solo trek. You trek at your own pace, be the master of your schedule and create an adventure that revolves around you. If you use a porter or guide or both, they will focus on you alone, alleviating any worries about logistics during the trip. You can take as many days off along the way as you want to extend a 12-day trek to 14 days or more. It’s all about immersing yourself in an experience that is defined by you and only limited by your imagination.

Private Trek

Private treks are great options for adventure enthusiasts looking for exclusivity and adaptability. You have the liberty to explore with your group, whether they are friends, family or corporate colleagues, without having to adjust with unknown co-trekkers. Everything from the departure date to the itinerary can be tailor made as per your preference. You will also be assured of total privacy as well as peace & silence since no one else except your group members will be there. A private trek guarantees a gratifying journey just the way you would like it to be.

Group Trek

Group treks are best for those who like to share their vacation and enjoy the company of like-minded people. With 2-10 participants in general, these fixed date departures and itineraries-based treks may not be flexible, but certainly a fun way to get associated with adventurers across the globe. They are generally cheaper as the expense is divided equivalently; these treks suit ones who relish camaraderie and don’t mind new friends on the trip.

Family Trek

Family treks are designed to be suitable for all ages. We provide extra bonding, comfort and safety. The family treks can be done with kids of any age and old parents too. Itineraries on the family trek are always customized according to your pace and selected destination. Family Treks will let you concentrate on your loved ones as well as the beautiful surroundings.

Drinking Water on The Poonhill Trekking

Drinking water is easily available on the Poon Hill Trek via Hot Spring Annapurna. Teahouses and guesthouses along the route offer boiled or filtered water, which we encourage you to drink rather than buy bottled water to reduce plastic waste. You can also fill your water bottle from taps or streams and use water purification tablets or a SteriPEN.

Purification tablets are easily available in pharmacies, marts and trekking shops in Kathmandu and Pokhara. It is convenient for water safety. SteriPEN is a UV-based water purifier, but you must buy it in your home country to have availability.

Do note that plastic bottles are banned after Chhomrong in the Annapurna region. You can carry them till Ghorepani but it’s not sold or allowed after Chhomrong. We recommend carrying your reusable water bottle or hydration system and using the locally available safe drinking options. Keep yourself hydrated taking care of environmental concerns of the area.
